Amy is scarred from both her mother's abuse, and her time as a rat.
She has abandonment issues related to her father, and the fact she never fitted in anywhere (she secretly always wanted to be one of the scoobies, but never had the drive to do good that it entailed).
Amy grew very attached to Willow's energy after all the years she spent as her pet rat, and views her as her closest friend. After the night on the town they spent together, Amy developed a crush on her. However, she was too afraid of rejection to act on it.
It hit Amy hard when Willow spurned her friendship, and she went off the rails, leading her father to kick her out of home. Amy made her way on the streets using her body and blood. Without her powers, she would have fallen prey to a demon or vampire by now (she's had more then a few close calls).
Since Willow came to power, Amy has developed a sort of hero-worship for her, and as a sort of groupie is hoping to find someone on her level to play with (magically).
Her slutty nature is all tied to self-validation; she wants to be wanted, as she's never really been in her whole life. It's also her way of filling the hole in her spirit (not that it works).
Amy is a bitch, catty and sarcastic, which is mainly a defense mechanism. She's very saucy and affectionate, and loves to please, but only if she has respect for the person or the game she's playing with them.
Magic began as an escape from social awkwardness, then spiralled into addiction, but with Willow's rise, it's finally become a way for her to get a leg up in a world that never gave her a chance.
Amy is well aware the white hats don't trust her, but that doesn't mean she won't have fun toying with them, especially at Willow's behest. She's even willing to pretend to play both sides if she thinks they'll buy it.
